Caring for Your IconByDesign Products
Our furniture is built to last, but natural wear and tear will occur over time. We believe this adds character and tells the story of how your IconByDesign pieces become part of your life.
Thank you for choosing IconByDesign. We hope each piece brings you many years of enjoyment.
General Care
When moving your furniture, always lift rather than drag to avoid damaging the legs. Please remind children not to stand on furniture, and only sit on sofas, chairs and stools.
Timber Care
Our solid American oak and walnut are sustainably sourced and valued for their strength and beauty. Each piece is finished with a clear satin lacquer that enhances the grain while offering subtle protection. Because natural timber varies in tone and pattern, every item is unique.
To protect the finish, polish your furniture when first unpacked and then every 3-4 months. Use a quality timber polish and dust the surface before application. Regular dusting with a soft microfiber cloth will help maintain the sheen and reduce fine scratches.
Only use timber-safe cleaning products. Avoid harsh chemicals as they may damage the finish.
When dining, use coasters, placemats, and tablecloths. After use, wipe underneath them to ensure no spills have seeped through. If a spill occurs, blot immediately with a soft damp cloth, then dry thoroughly. Heat and moisture can leave permanent marks, so avoid placing hot dishes or wet glasses directly on the surface.
Keep timber furniture out of direct sunlight and away from heating or cooling vents to prevent fading or drying. Timber is a natural material that may expand, shrink, or develop small cracks over time. These changes are part of its beauty and authenticity.
To minimise irregularities, avoid sudden or extreme changes in temperature, humidity, or exposure to sunlight.
Fabric Care
When you first receive your sofa or chairs, apply a fabric protection spray to help prevent stains. Always test in a hidden area first.
If spills occur, blot with a soft damp cloth. Do not rub, as this may push liquid deeper into the fabric and cause stains. Vacuum upholstery regularly to remove dust and dirt.
Keep fabric furniture out of direct sunlight to avoid fading. Avoid harsh cleaning products.
Some natural fibers may form small pills over time. This is normal and can be removed with a fabric pill remover. Pilling should reduce with regular use and care.
Leather Care
We use top-grain leather for its softness, durability, and timeless appeal. To protect it, apply a leather protection cream soon after your furniture arrives, then reapply every 3-4 months. These creams keep leather supple and help prevent drying or cracking.
Dust leather regularly with a soft damp cloth. Blot spills immediately to reduce the chance of staining. If cleaning is needed, only use products designed for leather upholstery.
Do not use shoe polishes or other non-upholstery products, as they can stain clothing and damage the finish.
Rug Care
Protecting Your Rug
A handmade natural fiber rug is an investment in beauty and longevity. With the right care, your rug will remain timeless and full of character.
Use a rug pad underneath to prevent slipping, protect your floors, and extend the life of your rug. Place rugs in low-traffic areas where possible, as heavy footfall will wear fibers more quickly. Rotate your rug every few months to even out wear and keep colors looking fresh.
Keep rugs out of direct sunlight, away from heating sources, and never in areas with high moisture. Our rugs are designed for indoor use only.
Vacuuming
Vacuum your rug regularly to maintain its appearance. Use a suction-only vacuum rather than one with a beater brush, which can pull fibers and create fuzz.
Avoid vacuuming over fringes, tassels, or bound edges, as this can cause fraying. Instead, gently clean these areas by hand. If you notice loose fibers, trim them carefully with scissors or tuck them back into the weave.
Vacuum the front of the rug two to three times a year and remember to turn it over and clean the reverse side as well.
Spills and Stains
If a spill occurs, blot immediately with a clean white cloth. Do not rub, as this can push liquid deeper into the fibers and cause staining. Use lukewarm water sparingly to lift the spill, taking care not to oversaturate the rug as this may cause dyes to bleed.
Never use harsh chemicals on rugs. If a stain persists despite your best efforts, we recommend contacting a professional rug cleaner.
