Rug Placement Guide

Finding the right rug size and placement can completely transform a room. A well-positioned rug anchors your furniture, adds comfort underfoot, and brings the whole space together. Whether you are styling a living room, dining room, or bedroom, the right rug not only enhances your décor but also creates balance and warmth.

The Living Room

The living room is often the largest and most used space in the home, which makes choosing the right rug size and placement especially important. A rug that is too small can create the “floating island” effect, where furniture feels disconnected and the room appears smaller and less inviting.

For balanced living room rug placement, make sure the rug sits at least 10cm under the front legs of your sofas and chairs. The rug does not need to cover the entire floor, but aim to leave a border of about 30cm between the rug and the walls to create a sense of proportion.

The Dining Room

Adding a rug to the dining room can transform the space, making it feel both stylish and welcoming. To ensure comfort and stability, the dining room rug should extend under the table and all chairs. This prevents tripping hazards and keeps chairs steady when pulled out.

For the best dining room rug size, allow at least 60cm of rug to extend beyond every edge of the table. Round rugs paired with round tables create a harmonious look, while round rugs in small spaces help soften the room’s layout.

The Bedroom

A rug in the bedroom adds warmth, softness, and a touch of luxury to your everyday routine. When considering bedroom rug placement, aim to position the rug so that at least two-thirds of it sits under the bed. This allows around 90 cm of soft rug to extend around the sides, giving you something comfortable to step onto in the morning.

You can choose to place bedside tables on top of the rug for a cohesive look, or start the rug just under the bed to create a framed effect. Either way, the right bedroom rug will anchor the room and make it feel complete.
