Initial Concept

The concept for the Olivia armchair was comfort - a beautiful statement piece to accompany the Olivia sofa and yet somewhere to curl up for some ‘me time’. A space to relax and snuggle into plush cushions, this piece is designed with ‘cosy’ in mind. The initial idea for the Olivia armchair combines form and function, is true to the Scandi design IconByDesign is known for, while keeping up our proud tradition of valuing authenticity of materials to craft quality furniture, designed for living.

Meet the Designer 

Armed with a Masters degree in Product Design at the Brera Academy of Arts in Milan, our Head of Product Design, Tania Da Cruz, brings a rounded, European aesthetic to IconByDesign. Focusing on sustainable solid wood and timeless craftsmanship, she guides the in-house design team to create Scandinavian inspired, Australian designed furniture with a streamlined modern aesthetic.

Sourcing of Materials

We work hard to ensure that we’re always producing sustainable furniture. For example, the solid American oak which makes up the bulk of the Olivia Armchair  is sourced from American forests which embrace sustainable principles - meaning the wood is sustainably harvested, works to restore the ecosystem, implements a replanting process, undertakes consistent environmental monitoring, and respects the land rights of indigenous peoples.

We also use oak because it's hardy and it lasts - it has a natural strength which makes it ideal for the interior home environment. Unlike veneered furniture, there's less damage from wear and tear so you don't have to throw it out to replace it with something equally replaceable. 

Our solid wood furniture is a provider of carbon storage and therefore has a positive effect on the planet by containing carbon, and its regrowth in sustainable managed forests adds to the carbon emission reduction. 

By crafting our solid American oak furniture, such as the Olivia armchair, from wood we are doing the best we can on the planet - making pieces that last through the generations and rejecting the tread of flat-pack, cheap, disposable, replaceable veneer furniture.

The Olivia Armchair cushions are available in three fabric types - offering different textures, feel and weave - and four colours across the range.  

Linen Blend - a high grade fabric which is thick and comfortable. 380 GSM and made from 85% Polyester and 15% Linen. Available in Stone Beige, Urban Gray, Mist Blue and Ocean Blue

Oxford Double Weaved 100% Polyester - hardwearing, durable and thick weaved fabric and yet with a lovely, luxurious feel. 449 GSM and made from 100% Polyester. Available in Granite Gray and Soft Gray. 

Natural Velvet - this fabric is a lovely all natural material called greige. Greige is an unfinished woven or knitted fabric that hasn’t been bleached or dyed. An extremely smooth, soft and simply pleasure to touch fabric. 350 GSM and made from 75% Cotton and 25% Linen. Available in one colour - Sand Beige.

What to Furnish With

To create the ultimate cosy Scandi or Mid-Century Modern styled living room, the Olivia armchair can be furnished with the Olivia sofa (2-seater, 3-seater, or both) and the Magnus round coffee table. The Olivia sofa will provide additional, comfortable seating for family and friends while also bringing in warmth and texture to the space. The Magnus round coffee table can center the room, provide a place to showcase your favorite accessories as well as being super practical. Placed beside the armchair, the round coffee table can be a great place for a lamp, creating the perfect reading nook.

Olivia’s covers are removable (dry clean only), and additional covers may be purchased separately so that you can mix it up with the seasons. Notice the rod detail that holds the cushions firmly in place and the rounded corners on the back of the frame that align with the Scandinavian-inspired form.
